Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such medications should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
