Nobody talks about the final delivery of the Ashes. The opening delivery that's legendary. That errant delivery that goes to the slips, that beautiful stroke for four, that fallen stump, bowled him! Concluding moments? I had to look them up. Moeen Ali cutting a stroke behind to conclude a batting effort loss in a dead rubber in 2015; Boyd Rankin being taken at slip off Ryan Harris, Rankin featuring in his one and only Test at the fag-end of a quick disintegration in a 5-0 whitewash that's been full of them in 2014; a Steve Harmison bouncer glancing off Langer's shoulder for extras, the sole boundary the Aussies achieve in a target they'll never get to make in 2005.

It distinguishes between wondering how things will go, and knowing how they do. One undeniable fact, there's no assurance there will be a happy ending. For the last decade, England's Australian tours have concluded in failure, rather than with them. Andy Flower lost his job as head coach after a crushing loss, in 2013-14, Chris Silverwood was sacked after another, in 2021-22. But then the primary motive Stokes tried to instruct his squad to follow this style was so they would be in a more advantageous state to execute the style of play he feels will perform effectively for them in Australia.

The forthcoming contest, for which they have been training rigorously, already feels like the result they can't get away from. It is this aggressive approach's critical moment. And there are too many predictions of failure in the national sport for the team to escape criticism if they do experience another poor loss in the coming weeks. Stokes's approach has been founded on challenging skeptics, and the flipside is it feels as if there are numerous observers who would be pleased to be shown right.

In light of this, it's a good moment to point out that the important question is not only where this concludes, but regardless of whether we found pleasure along the way. This is the England team, too, that managed to end up suffering a defeat in a Test by an large margin even though the other team made a relatively low total; who concluded losing one of the better Tests ever staged after making a bold declaration in the initial batting effort against New Zealand, and then did the same thing against the Aussies; who were soundly beaten by a massive 434 runs in Rajkot, and who were on the losing side of one of the island nation's finest wins. As a unit, they have secured some of the unlikeliest wins, experienced some of the ugliest dismissals, achieved some of the most improbable centuries, and taken some of the most remarkable five-wicket hauls in the history of the English game.

No matter how this prestigious tournament shakes out, they have been, in turn, incredible, preposterous, absurd, frustrating, and totally, unapologetically, boldly entertaining.
